An original constitution of mind is not the (inly cause of a person's being influenced by pne associating principle rrtore than by others: jt was formerly observed, that this may proceed from habit. But the habit generally takes its rise from an original propensity to follow chiefly one relation; it always takes its rise from this, when its effects are permanent. A diversity in the predominant principle of association, is often observable very early in children, previous to the possibility of their having contracted habits of thinking, and must therefore be natural. If the orig'w nal propensity be weak, it may be overpowered by other causes: but if it be strong, it will frequently exert itself; by frequent exertion it will beget a habit of being influenced by it; and by the formation of the habit it will be confirmed. Still, therefore, the predominance of one associating principle or another, is, in most casses at least, ultimately resolvable into an original constitution of the mind.
